Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze the financial costs and benefits of the ecological shrimp farming production model in Tien Hai district, Thai Binh province in Red River Delta, Vietnam. The coastal survey sample includes 71 households growing ecological shrimp randomly selected in 6 communes of Tien Hai. Descriptive statistics and cost – benefit analysis were used for the economic performance models of the production. The results show that ecological shrimp production is profitable with a benefit to cost ratio greater than 2.0. Fixed and variable costs for 1 hectare of shrimp farming are fairly balanced. Of the variable costs, the cost of breeding stock accounted for the highest proportion. The main challenges in converting traditional shrimp production to ecological model include lack of market information, technical support and access to key purchasing points. Therefore, it is critical for farming households receiving supports from provincial agricultural management agencies, agricultural extension centers as well as information channel development based on social networks to improve their production capacity and market access.
